Lenny was one of the first chatbots to combat telemarketing spam with automated, but remarkably convincing, trolling recordings. Lenny’s recordings hit the internet in 2011 and since then a community of Lenny fans has sprung up around this telemarketing chatbot. This group of Lenny admirers exchange recordings of frustrated telemarketers and scammers who sometimes stay on the line forever to sell this non-existent old man everything from domain names to the most advanced security systems. Some telemarketers go nuts when they find out that Lenny is just a recording, but the majority of telemarketers come up with a polite excuse to end the call.
